Maren Vale’s little brother, Theo, is ten now. He carries an old phone he calls the Brick, waits on the steps of the Station Branch library every afternoon, and would like his sister to stop collecting him like a package. Their mother works nights, and the library is free. Aftercare at the Y is not, and there they make you sing.

This fall, the district’s new route sheet stops Theo’s bus at the corner by the green book drop, on a street the town renamed in March. On Friday the door stayed open for about ten seconds. On Monday it was forty-one. Now Maren has to meet the bus every day, Owen is timing the door with his watch, and the air spilling down the steps on a warm October afternoon smells like old snow. Maren has a rule of her own: tell it all before you make it smaller. Bus 4’s driver, Mr. Lusk, has one quiet request: don’t let Theo sit in the back.
